9:58a Feh
Something happened to my work machine over the weekend. All my bookmarks: gone All my quicklinks: gone
My archived data is still there. My work stuff is still there. Big chunks of my tweaked environment need rebuilding.
I am tempted to buy myself a new work laptop just in spite.

Finally started rebuilding the deck. Very little progress, but I now have ... a PLAN!

6:44a Nature
I was raised with an appreciation for nature. I generally approve of most furry, feathery, or scaly wild critters that are not actually trying to eat me. The exception to this generality is Frickin Woodpeckers at 6 am on a Saturday!

9:34a Morning drive commentary from Da Kid
Will and I have been discussing the kids who pick on him and what they say and how they say it. We talked about peer pressure and about kids doing what the group does even if they don't want to do it because they do want to be liked. We talked about kids giving and getting respect to and from each other. We talked about bullies and kids who try and make themselves big by making other kids feel bad. Mostly, Will talked and I listened.
"I can accept being small but I can't take having it rubbed in my face."
"I should stick with my friends. There are not as many of them as the big group of boys who don't like me, but they are smarter and stronger than they are. It is the smart and strong small group versus the large group of normal kids."
"First impressions are very important. If we can show a new kid that we are better even though we are not as many, he will join us."
"I am what the other kids call a teacher's pet."
One of the hardest parts of raising Will is just letting him talk. I want to give my input and guide him, but really listening to him is more important at this point. Besides, listening to Will is one of the joys of my existence.

9:01p Trivia game
On the bus ride home from a field trip Will's campmates played a Trivia game. The question Will offered was "What is the formula for calculating the hypotenuse?" The question Will answered was "Name the rock band that is named after a heavy metal and a flying machine."
I'm not sure which of these I am more proud.

8:16a Backup Software Recommendations?
Hi friends. I have a nifty new external hard drive. My laptop runs Vista. I'd love some recommendations for backup software that will run the back up automatically based on whatever schedule I set. Any suggestions? Thanks! *kisses*

4:25p summer in Kyoto...
...really is as sticky and humid and wretched as promised. It got up to 35C today, and I'm so hot I'm actually queasy.
Fuck the electric bill. A/C it is.
Tomorrow I think I will enjoy the delicious cooling A/C in a movie theatre while I watch Harry Potter. Hopefully the rest of Kyoto will be too distracted by Gion Matsuri to compete with me for seats.

8:25a Shoreleave
Will had a great time at Shore Leave. I had a great time at Shore Leave. Will spent time with his grandmother. I spent time with my mother. Will spent time in children's programming. I spent time in the bar. Will played Cthulu Munchkin. I played poker. Will hung out with other quirky, nerdy kids. I hung out with terri_osborne, tiggerallyn, kradical, Marco Palmieri, Geoff Trowbridge, David Mack and Glenn Hauman and various other interesting individuals.
We both came away very satisfied with the weekend.

Just an FYI for those who may still not know - Steph and I will be going to Pennsic this year. We'll pretty much be there for the whole thing.
That's it. Boring post, ain't it?

12:59a How to succeed at speed dating
Seriously, you guys, this is awesome advice if you don't know how to talk to peoplpe at parties, and so far one of the only really interesting things I've pulled off of reading Japanese "marriage hunting" advice fora on Mixi.jp (Japan's answer to MySpace, basically). So, should you be unfortunate to find yourself at a speed dating kind of party (which are quite popular in Japan, though they don't call them that), here's what to do:First of all, as for parties that are nothing but time to talk freely, I'm sure everyone's continually dissatisfied. It's because, men and women alike, there will definitely be people there who won't talk to anyone. I think it's really THAT that makes everyone just want their fucking money back.
So, if you have approximately three minutes each, you can talk to everyone. Three minutes though, if it's someone you click with, isn't enough. But, if you don't get on, it's agonizing, and if you had ten minutes, it'd be torture! So if you have three minutes, you can get through it by relying on appropriate politeness.
If there's someone who makes you think, "Ah, three minutes just isn't enough!" it's OK to talk to them again during the free conversation time. But, everyone's aiming for that kind of conversation partner.
Here's where the battle begins. The first point of successful strategy is to keep a position facing her or at her side. You've got to dive into talk with her so that other bastards can't break into your conversation.
In order to do that, first you look at her profile card, and briefly talk about a topic appropriate to your partner. If you don't get that conversational hook ready in advance, there's no point.
Also, you absolutely must go for a partner who has topics in common with you. And, ask yourself how your partner is reacting. If you determine that you wouldn't get her vote, look for your next target. Since she's probably talking to someone else, breaking in will require some chutzpah.
( Original Japanese text behind the cut, for those of you who want to have at either it or my translation choices )
So there you go kids. If you ever get stuck at any kind of singles event and find yourself conversationally impaired, do this (I suppose if it's not a formally organized thing where you might have someone's profile, ask a friend about your target). It's some reasonably good microsociology, and the genders in the original aside, I'm sure this would work for women too.
(P.S. This was posted in a public forum, hence I get to share it with you all.)

3:19a Fucking around on iTunes and SurfTheChannel: notes on media
I realized the other day, for those of you who've watched Dollhouse: wouldn't this be the perfect theme song for it?
It's creepy in its perfectness.
Also, while I'm on the subject of media, my present TV addiction is How I Met Your Mother. I think, first of all, that it's the most Goffmanian TV show I've ever seen, and also that it's sort of like an unironic televised version of "Stuff White People Like." Also it has Neil Patrick Harris, and I too am a overeducated bourgeois white person who likes all that stuff.
